Astronomers

Atkinson, Robert D’escourt, Prof. (1898-1982), born near Rhaeadr, astronomer, physicist, Chief Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Later professor at the University of Indiana at Bloomington, (Jones 2014, 80).

Observatories

Powys County Observatory [POCO] (1990- ), Llanshay Lane, Knighton, originally established by Brian Williams and Cheryl Powers, a private facility that provided astronomy outreach to the public. It is equipped with a camera obscura, planetarium and twin refracting telescopes (6 & 13-inch). Now renamed The Spaceguard Centre it participates in Spaceguard a global effort to discover and monitor Near-Earth Objects that may pose a danger, through collision, at a future date. The centre is currently raising funds to refurbish and re-locate a 60-cm Schmidt telescope from the IoA, Cambridge – Project DRAX (Moore 1996, 173-6).
