Astronomers
Maclear, Sir Thomas (1794–1879), born at Newtownstewart, but educated at Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospitals, London. Later working at Bedford Infirmary, England where he met Henry Smyth, he developed an interest in astronomy (ODNB; see Bedfordshire).
Roberts, William John [FRAS] (1867-1942), born Dungannon who developed his interest in astronomy during childhood (see Armagh; Obit., MNRAS, 103 (1943), 72-3).
Observatories
O M Dark Sky Park Observatory [OMDSPO] (2021- ), Davagh Forest, Cookstown, established by Mid Ulster District Council. The run-off roof observatory, with attached exhibition area, is equipped with a 14-inch SCT catadioptric telescope on a fork equatorial mount.
