Frederick James Hargreaves FRAS (‘Jim’) was born in Bradford on 10 February 1891. Died September 4 1970. ‘Perhaps the best optical engineer of his generation’ Jim Hysom JBAA Obituary.
William Gascoigne lived at Thorpe on the Hill at the far edge of Middleton Leeds – not Belle Isle (though there was a a New Hall Farm there until the 1950’s). Thorpe Hall is standing (but derelict) and is assumed to have been built on the site of the original New Hall. I suspect that it may actually incorporate a part of the New Hall, but would have to find a seventeenth-century image of the building in order to give substance to this suspicioun.

Thanks for clarifying the location of Thorpe on the Hill in relation to Leeds, I have edited the Gascoigne entry to reflect your comments.
