Observatories

Adams’s Machrihanish Observatory [AMOA] (1897-c.1904), ‘Machrihanish House’, Machrihanish, in Argyll, established by John Franklin-Adams at his Scottish holiday home. The observatory was equipped with a 6-inch refractor equatorially mounted along with a transit instrument. It appears that the telescope was later moved to his Surrey home at ‘Mervill Hill’ house (ODNBObit., MNRAS, 73 (1913), ) 210-3).

Astronomy Groups

Bute Astronomical Club (BuAC) founded before 2014.  Members meet at Green Tree, The Moat Centre, Rothesay, Isle of Bute (PA20 9LD).

Helensburgh Astronomical Society (HelAS) founded 2002.  Members meet monthly at Helensburgh Parish Church, Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh (G84 8UP).  They hold observing sessions at  University of Glasgow’s Observatory (16-inch Meade SCT) jointly with The Astronomical Society of Glasgow.

West Kintyre Stargazers (WKS), founded (?).  Members meet at Argyll Hotel, Bellochantuy, Campbeltown (PA28 6QE).
