Astronomy Groups: County of London

Astronomical Society of Haringey (ASH), founded in 1970 from an idea by the Society’s founder, Fred Clarke who devised a Space Age Exhibition held at the Arts Centre in Wood Green, London.  Member meet monthly (3rd Thur.) at the First Floor, Music & Drama Block, Ashmole School, Southgate, London (N14 5RJ).

Astronomical Society of London (ASL) [1820-1831], founded 1820 it later received the Royal Warrant from King William IV to become the Royal Astronomical Society, one of the learned societes located at Burlington House, Piccadilly in London (Dreyer 1923, 1-49).

Flamsteed Astronomy Society (FlAS), founded 1999 and is part of the membership organisation of Royal Museums Greenwich.  Members meet monthly (Mon., Sept./Oct.-May/Jun.) at the National Maritime Museum, or in the Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG). The Society stages viewing sessions with the ROG’s Great Equatorial Telescope.

Hampstead Garden Suburb Astronomical Society (HGSAS), founded 2001, a group of former students of an Astronomy Course run by Francisco Diego at the HGS Institute.  Member meet monthly at Oriel Room, Free Church Hall, Northway, London (NW11 7AG).

The Baker Street Irregular Astronomers (BSIA), founded 2010.  Members of the free to join group meet for observing sessions from the Hub of London’s Regent Park.

The Hampstead Scientific Society (HSS), founded 1899.  The group has both astronomy and meteorology sections with an observatory housing a 6-inch Cooke refractor and weather station (Lower Terrace, nr. Whitestone Pond, Hampstead Heath).  The observatory is open to public viewing (Fri., Sat. nights & Sun. am, Sept.-Apr.). The society meet monthly at The Crypt Room, St John’s Church, Church Row, Hampstead, London (NW3 6UU).
