Observatories
United Charities Institution Observatory [UCIO] (1836-90), 5 Culduthel Road, Ardkeen Tower, Inverness. Built as the Inverness United Charities Institution to house the Inverness Juvenile Female School, the Ladies’ Female Work Society and the Inverness Infant School (Cameron 1847,70; Gavine 1981, 256; Howse 1986) [Coordinates: 57° 29’N, 4° 13’W].
Jim Savage-Lowden Observatory [JSLO] (2008- ), NTS Visitor Centre, Culloden Moor, established by the Highland Astronomical Society. The domed fibre-glass building houses a 14-inch SCT catadioptric telescope on an equatorial mounting, adjacent to a wooden shed meeting room.
Astronomy Groups
Highlands Astronomical Society (HiAS), founded 1994 after after the merger of the Moray Astronomical Society and the Inverness Astronomical Society. Monthly meetings are held at the lecture hall, Smithton-Culloden Free Church, Murray Rd., Smithton (IV2 7YU).
Inverness Astronomical Society (IAS) founded (?). Became the Highland Astronomical Society after merger with the Moray Astronomical Society in 1994.
