Harrison, John (1693-1776), born near Pontefract invented the ships first chronometer (ODNB).

Ramsden, Jesse (1735-1800), born at Salterhebble near Halifax designed eyepiece (ODNB; McConnell 2013).

Sharp(e), Abraham (bap. 1653-1742), born at Little Horton near Bradford who was educated locally before moving to London and becoming an instrument maker. A friend of John Flamsteed, who provided instruments for the newly established Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1678. Later he returned to Horton Hall, the family seat, where he and setup an observatory and remained for the rest of his life (ODNB; Cudworth 1889, 158).
