Astronomers

Scott, James (1844-1928), born Midlem, nr. Selkirk, a stone-mason who was apprenticed at Galashiels before moving to Selkirk.  His hobby was mending clocks, but he became interested in astronomy after a spectacular meteor shower in 1842. He constructed impressive astronomical clocks, which brought him fame, constructing his so-called ‘Jupiter Clock’ for Selkirk Town Hall (Lindsay 1908; Weddell 1935).
